San Diego County EV Charging Infrastructure GIS Analysis

In partnership with San Diego County and an advisor to the U.N’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network, I focused on optimizing Electric Vehicle (EV) charger distribution in the county, in line with SDG 7 for sustainable energy. Utilizing R, Excel, and ArcGIS, I analyzed the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) charging infrastructure, emphasizing equitable distribution in disadvantaged areas and analyzing the regional needs for additional chargers​​​​, and identifying candidate project areas. 

The combination of R and Excel for collecting, manipulating, and analyzing U.S Census data, alongside ArcGIS for mapping, was pivotal in identifying infrastructural gaps and proposing cost-effective solutions. This analysis revealed the necessity for around 144,900 EV chargers by 2030 and involved a foundational costing plan, addressing equipment, software, labor, and grid compatibility costs​​.

The project’s recommendations set a model for sustainable and equitable EV charger distribution in San Diego County. This initiative not only supports San Diego’s clean energy goals but also provides a framework for other regions to adopt similar sustainable practices​, further promoting Sustainable Development Goals.
